A video circulating on social media this week depicts a silhouetted girl walking through the flames of a destroyed building in Gaza.
The girl in the video would later be identified as six-year-old Ward Khalil.
The building was the Fahmi al-Jawjari school-turned-shelter in Gaza City on May 26, immediately after Israeli airstrikes destroyed three classrooms used by displaced Palestinians as sleeping quarters.
34 Palestinians were killed in the school, with another 20 killed nearby.
The attack killed Ward’s mother and two of her siblings.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Ward recalled the horrific experience.
“When I woke up, I found a huge fire, and I saw my mom was dead,” she said.
