Turkish authorities arrested a man suspected to have attempted to set fire to the historic Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque in Istanbul on July 11, Anadolu Agency reported Tuesday.

The man, reportedly identified with the initials M.G., was seen on CCTV footage allegedly trying to set the carpet of the mosque’s prayer hall on fire.

A woman then saw the fire and ran to notify the Imam. The fire was then quickly extinguished.

According to Turkish media, security around the mosque has been increased.

The Hagia Sophia was originally built as a cathedral by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 537 A.D. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (later named Istanbul) in 1453, A.D., the gigantic structure was converted into a mosque under Sultan Mehmet II.
