Israeli airstrikes early Monday morning killed at least 54 Palestinians in northern Gaza, including 36 while they were sleeping in a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City.

The Fahmi al-Jarjawi School located in the Daraj neighborhood of the city was housing “hundreds” of Palestinians from Beit Lahia when it was attacked, Palestinian Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal told the AFP.

One father and five children were killed, Fahmy Awad, head of the Gaza health ministry’s emergency service told Al Jazeera. Three classrooms used as sleeping quarters were targeted, he added.

Video footage shows apocalyptic scenes with the area ablaze and charred bodies scattered across the floor. Members of the Palestinian Civil Defense were seen hurriedly trying to find survivors of the attack, many of whom had acute burn marks.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) explained that they were targeting “a Hamas and Islamic Jihad command and control centre,” according to the BBC, blaming the Palestinian groups for the civilian casualties.

However, speaking to Al Jazeera correspondent Ibrahim al-Khalili, survivors of the attack recalled the horrific incident.

Ahed Sameeh, who reportedly had the blood of his three-year-old daughter stained on his shirt, explained “we are nothing but defenseless peaceful civilians. We have nothing to do with the fighters and the weapons.”

Another survivor, Busha Rajab, explained she woke up “to the sound of people screaming and panicking” and “a big explosion.”

Israel’s most recent attack on the school comes as Hamas agreed to a United States proposed ceasefire deal in Gaza on Monday, according to a Palestinian official who spoke to Reuters.

The deal would see 10 hostages released in two phases, a 70-day cessation of hostilities and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from the famine-stricken Palestinian enclave as more aid trucks would be allowed in.

However, an Israeli official who also spoke to the London-based news outlet said that Israel rejected the proposal, with US special envoy Steve Witkoff calling it “completely unacceptable” because it was not the same version as his.
