Over a dozen Iranian missiles were fired at a major United States air base in Qatar on Monday in retaliation for American strikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran over the weekend.
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has targeted the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with a devastating and powerful missile attack in Operation News of Victory,” the IRGC said in a statement Monday. “This base is the headquarters of the air force and the largest strategic asset of the United States terrorist army in the West Asia region.”
The Al Udeid Air Base serves as the headquarters of U.S. Central Command in the Middle East.
President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that the attack involved 14 missiles, but no American casualties were reported.
“Iran has officially responded to our obliteration of their nuclear facilities with a very weak response, which we expected, and have very effectively countered,” Trump wrote. “I am pleased to report that NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done.”
Multiple reports from Reuters and The New York Times indicated that Iran informed U.S. officials of the planned attack hours in advance—mirroring its response to the 2020 assassination of IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani.
The U.S. State Department issued a “shelter-in-place” warning before the missiles were launched. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on X around the same time: “We neither initiated the war nor wanted it; but we will not leave the aggression against Iran unanswered.”
While the attack was seen as limited in scope, it drew condemnation from Qatar.
“The State of Qatar strongly condemns the attack that targeted Al Udeid Air Base by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard,” a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry wrote on X. “We consider this a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Qatar, its airspace, international law, and the United Nations Charter.”
Iranian Parliament votes to close Strait of Hormuz, threatening global oil trade
The limited attack on Al Udeid Air Base came as Iran’s parliament voted Saturday to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that carries about 20% of the world’s oil trade.
While further alienating Tehran, the move is widely seen as a strategic measure aimed at pressuring the United States and Israel. Analysts say it could spur Western nations to push both countries to de-escalate hostilities with Iran in order to avoid a global economic crisis.
The decision still requires approval from a higher legislative authority, the Supreme National Security Council, according to Iranian MP and security official Esmail Kosari, who spoke to Iranian state media agency IRNA.
