At least 55,104 Palestinians have been killed and over 127,394 injured from Israel’s grueling 20-month assault on the Gaza Strip, the enclave’s Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.
Most of the casualties in the ongoing war have been women and children.
The staggering increase comes as the ministry announced that 123 Palestinians were killed and over 474 injured within the past 24 hours from Israeli airstrikes across Gaza.
Many more have reportedly been killed by the Israeli military near aid distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF), a privately owned organization tasked with delivering aid in the enclave, backed by the United States and Israel but condemned by the United Nations.
Eyewitness accounts since June 1 informed multiple media outlets that they saw Israeli troops, tanks, drones, and quadcopters firing on crowds seeking aid supplies as a near-daily occurrence.
Aside from the deaths caused by the war and nearly all of Gaza’s 2.2 million population being displaced, Israel’s ongoing assault on the enclave has destroyed nearly all infrastructure.
Almost all of the enclave’s residential buildings have been destroyed, and over 90% of Gaza’s educational facilities, including all seven of its universities, have been demolished.
Moreover, the enclave’s health system has been struggling immensely, its staff and resources overwhelmed by constant fuel shortages and an unending stream of injured Palestinians.
Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a statement that “at least 94%” of the health facilities from hospitals to medical clinics have either been partially or totally destroyed.
Out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals, only 19 are functioning, with many forced to stop providing medical assistance whenever Israeli attacks are in proximity.
