The death toll from a plethora of Israeli attacks near Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid distribution centers has risen to 163, with at least 1,495 wounded, Gaza’s Health Ministry announced Tuesday.
The ministry said in a statement that 36 people were killed and 208 injured around GHF sites in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city. Eyewitnesses told multiple news outlets, including Al Jazeera, that they saw Israeli tanks firing at the desperate crowds gathered for aid.
In a statement on Telegram, the Israeli military said it was “currently unaware of injuries caused by [Israeli] fire within the humanitarian aid distribution site,” and that an investigation was underway. The GHF also stated it was unaware of any violence around its centers.
The GHF, which is backed by the United States and Israel, has drawn criticism from the United Nations and various aid organizations and refuted nearly all claims of violence in previous incidents since June 1, the first day such deadly attacks were reported.
Since then, the Israeli military has reportedly opened fire on thousands of Palestinians nearly every day.
