The Israeli military has bombed Tehran, killing the Commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Hussein Salami, Iranian state media announced early Friday morning.
The Associated Press, as well as several Iranian state news outlets reported that the Israeli strikes targeted both a nuclear facility and a district within Tehran where many military leaders reside, fearing that other leaders are also dead.
Explosions could be heard across the Iranian capital according to the AP, who reported that Israel declared a state of emergency and closed its airspace after launching the attack.
Shortly after the reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a televised address announcing the launch of "Operation Rising Lion" aimed at destroying Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile infrastructure. He added that the attack will last "as many days as it takes to remove this threat."
The AP also reported that United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Israel took "unilateral action," adding that the US was not involved in the strikes.
