Palestinian health minister Dr. Majed Abu Ramadan said that 29 children and elderly died from starvation on Thursday in the Gaza Strip.
“In the last couple of days we lost 29 children,” and that they were “starvation-related,” Abu Ramadan told reporters. He later clarified that the number of deaths consisted of the elderly, according to a Reuters report.
Abu Ramadan also stated that thousands of Gazans are at risk of the same fate.
The news comes only days after UN aid chief Tom Fletcher told the BBC on Tuesday that 14,000 babies could die of starvation in Gaza within “the next 48 hours.”
Despite Israel allowing 90 aid trucks to enter the Palestinian enclave on Thursday, they were only to partially replenish bakeries, according to Abu Ramadan.
“My information is that very few shipments went inside Gaza, 90-100 truck loads and in the south and mid zones,” Abu Ramadan said. “As far as I know, it’s only flour for bakeries.”
The limited aid has not yet reached Gaza’s civilians however, as Younis al-Khatib, Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) president told reporters “no civilian has received anything,” according to an Al Jazeera report.
After nearly three months of blockading aid flow into Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel would allow “basic” aid into the enclave amid international pressure to avert a humanitarian crisis.
Despite aid trucks moving in, Israel has been relentlessly attacking Gaza with airstrikes and ground attacks over the past two weeks, killing hundreds in Operation Gideon’s Chariots.
