At least 78 people in Iran have been killed and over 320 injured following Israel’s attack on the country, according to Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani, who addressed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday.
“A series of targeted assassinations were against senior military officials, nuclear scientists, and innocent civilians,” Iravani said, adding that “the overwhelming majority of them [were] civilians, including women and children.”
Israel and Iran continued to bombard each other throughout Friday and into Saturday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched “Operation Rising Lion,” targeting Iran’s top military officials, nuclear scientists and university professors.
Multiple news outlets reported that the strikes hit air defense systems, military bases, nuclear facilities and two airports across Iran.
Netanyahu called the attack "a targeted military operation to roll back the Iranian threat to Israel's very survival."
In a televised address on Friday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed to “inflict heavy blows” in retaliation for what he called an Israeli act of war, launching “Operation Severe Punishment.”
Hundreds of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones were fired toward Israel in four waves, striking targets across the country, including in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where missiles lit up the sky.
Multiple outlets reported Friday night that Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system failed to intercept many of the missiles due to the sheer volume, despite assistance from the United States in intercepting a large number of incoming projectiles.
While still unverified, Iranian media reported that one of the missiles hit the Israeli military headquarters, The Kirya.
This comes as US President Donald Trump threatened Iran on his social media platform Truth Social, warning that if Tehran does not reach a deal with Washington over its nuclear program by Sunday, it would face "even more brutal" attacks.
