Egyptian soccer star Mohamed Salah on Saturday slammed a tribute by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to slain Palestinian player Suleiman al-Obeid.
Salah criticized the group for failing to condemn al-Obeid’s killing by Israel.
UEFA posted on X: “Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the ‘Palestinian Pele.’ A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.”
Salah reposted the tribute by writing: “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?” The repost has over 100 million views.
Al-Obeid, 41, was reportedly killed Thursday by Israeli forces in southern Gaza while attempting to seek aid in the enclave.
The Gaza Strip has been devastated by starvation and faces an imminent famine, according to humanitarian agencies.
The Palestinian Football Association confirmed his death in a statement, describing him as “one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football.”
Al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals in his career, becoming one of the most recognized Palestinian athletes of his generation.
Since October 2023, Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 662 athletes, according to the association.
UEFA has not publicly responded to Salah’s criticism.
