New York City Police Officer Didarul Islam was among four people killed in a Midtown Manhattan office building shooting Monday that left the gunman and three others dead, officials said.
Islam, 36, was a Muslim immigrant from Bangladesh who had worked with the New York Police Department for more than three years, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
Adams described him as a devoted public servant and “a godly person.”
“Everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person,” Adams said at a Monday press conference. “He was saving lives.”
“He was protecting New Yorkers. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.”
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called Islam a “hero” who was killed while confronting the gunman as an off-duty security guard.
“He put himself in harm’s way, he made the ultimate sacrifice – shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city,” Tisch said. “He died as he lived, a hero.”
Islam is survived by his parents, a pregnant wife, and two children.
“He was always thinking of others, always ready to help. He died trying to save lives,” said Syed Tanjib Mujib, a friend of Islam’s from Bangladesh, in an interview with Reuters. “Our hearts are broken, but we’re proud of him. He’ll always be remembered.”
Mosques across New York City expressed grief over Islam’s death.
The Islamic Cultural Center of New York told @Islamic, “It is such a sad loss,” adding, “We pray he reaches the highest level of Paradise, Ameen.”
The Islamic Society of Mid Manhattan said, “We are making dua for his soul.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
