Louisiana State Police on Thursday arrested 41-year-old Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, nearly four months after he ran onto the field during the Super Bowl 59 halftime show waving Palestinian and Sudanese flags in protest.
In a press release, police said a warrant had been issued for Nantambu’s arrest on charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace by interruption of a lawful assembly.
Nantambu turned himself in and has been booked, according to the Associated Press.
The incident took place on Feb. 9, when Nantambu was tackled by security after entering the field during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance. He was initially detained but not charged by New Orleans police. However, he received a lifetime ban from all NFL events.
Following the protest, Nantambu was interviewed by multiple news outlets, including NBC, where he said his Muslim faith motivated him to speak out against Israel’s war in Gaza and the civil war in Sudan.
“I hope God shifts Trump’s heart to be empathetic and compassionate to those who are suffering in Palestine and do what is right by the Palestinians,” he said. “And if he can, help the Sudanese—which I’m sure he can.”
More than 55,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed during Israel’s 20-month campaign in Gaza, where human rights groups have accused Israel of genocide.
In Sudan, over 150,000 people have reportedly been killed in the civil war between the country’s Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since the conflict began in April 2023.
In a statement to the AP, the NFL expressed support for Nantambu’s arrest.
“We take any attempt to disrupt any part of an NFL game, including the halftime show, very seriously and are pleased this individual will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
