Multiple American-Muslim organizations and rights groups condemned the murders of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington D.C. Wednesday night.

A 31-year-old Illinois man opened fire on a group of people outside the Capital Jewish Museum, killing Yaron Lischinsky, 30 and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26. Upon his arrest, Elias Rodriguez was seen on video saying “free, free Palestine.”

FBI Director Kash Patel called the murders an “act of terror.”

Shortly after the shooting was reported, the largest Muslim civil rights group in the US, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), released a statement denouncing the attack while maintaining its stark opposition to Israeli military policy.

“While millions of Americans feel extreme frustration at the sight of the Israeli government slaughtering Palestinian men, women and children on a daily basis with weapons paid for with our taxpayer dollars, political violence is an unacceptable crime and is not the answer,” the statement read. “Such violence only undermines the pursuit of justice.”

An American Muslim advocacy and public policy group, the Muslim Political Action Council (MPAC) also condemned the attack.

“The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) is appalled by and unequivocally denounces the killing of two staff members affiliated with the Israeli Embassy during an event in Washington, D.C., on the evening of May 21.” the statement read. “Political violence has no place in our society and is a profound injustice and a direct affront to the principles of diplomatic immunity and protecting civilians that form the foundation of both our faith and our democracy.”

MPAC also denounced anti-Jewish sentiment, saying that “Now more than ever, we must reject hatred and division, whether it’s antisemitism or scapegoating of any group.”

Rodriguez has since been charged with two counts of murder.
