Imam Ayman Soliman, a Muslim chaplain at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, was detained Wednesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Muslim Legal Fund of America said.
Soliman, an Egyptian national, arrived in the United States in 2014 and was granted asylum in 2018 after applying for protected status.
According to his attorney Christina Jump, who spoke to WCPO, she said he was working as a journalist during the Egyptian revolution.
He was detained following a scheduled check-in at the Blue Ash Homeland Security office and is being held at Butler County Jail in Hamilton, Ohio.
After his detainment, Muslim, Christian and Jewish faith leaders, local politicians and community members gathered outside the Homeland Security building for a protest and press conference, according to The Enquirer.
“We are shocked as a community, who is already vulnerable, who already feels targeted,” said Tala Ali, chair of the Clifton Mosque and the Islamic Association of Cincinnati.
Anticipating the possibility of detention, Soliman spoke to state Rep. Munira Abdullahi prior to the check-in. He said his 2019 green card application was denied and that his asylum was officially terminated in June.
“And how, they terminated my asylum status, revoked my employment authorization, so I lost my job,” he said in the interview. “And a couple of days later, I got the notice to appear in one of the ICE offices.”
He previously served as a Muslim chaplain at Northwestern University and for the Ohio prison system. He is also a board member of the Clifton Mosque and has been involved with multiple Muslim organizations, according to his biography on the mosque’s website.
One of his main goals of the mosque is to help strengthen youth members of his community and make them an integral part of the community, according to the website.
ICE has not yet released a statement about Soliman’s detainment.
