United States President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House dinner on Monday that a “massive negotiation” is underway involving Hamas, Israel, and Iran to reach a ceasefire agreement.
“Gaza right now is in the midst of a massive negotiation between us and Hamas and Israel, and Iran actually is involved, and we’ll see what’s going to happen with Gaza,” Trump said. “We want to get the hostages back.”
55 hostages are still being held in Gaza, according to Reuters, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying Tuesday that “meaningful progress” is being made on a deal proposed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff last month.
The proposed agreement includes a 60-day ceasefire and the release of about 20 hostages and thousands of Palestinians prisoners detained by Israel, with the goal of paving the way for further negotiations to end Israel’s grueling 20-month assault on Gaza.
Iran's involvement in the talks, aside from being the main backer of militant groups such as Hamas, come as the US conducted a stream of several high-level meetings with the Islamic Republic over the past few weeks in a renewed nuclear deal.
If agreed upon, the deal would see the dismantlement of Iran's decades-long nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
With Trump's recent comments on the Gaza negotiations, a preliminary agreement with Iran might be underway.
The Israeli war cabinet, led by Netanyahu, is scheduled to convene Thursday to discuss the deal, according to The Jewish Times.
