The Gaza Health Ministry reported Sunday that at least 67 Palestinians were killed and more than 150 injured in an attack near the Zikim crossing in northern Gaza. Survivors said that the Israeli military fired at the hungry crowd.

The crossing was being used by 25 aid trucks belonging to the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP), according to an Associated Press report.

The WFP condemned the incident, saying in a statement it “reiterates that any violence involving civilians seeking humanitarian aid is completely unacceptable.”

Eyewitnesses said Israeli tanks and drones opened fire on the crowd gathered around the trucks.

“Suddenly tanks surrounded us and trapped us as gunshots and strikes rained down,” Ehab Al-Zei, a survivor, told the AP. “I will never go back again. Let us die of hunger, it’s better.”

The ministry also reported that at least seven Palestinians were killed in a separate strike at an aid site in the southern city of Khan Younis.

The Israeli military said in a statement it had been working to organize aid distribution in northern Gaza and had fired warning shots. The military blamed Hamas for the mayhem.

At least 86 Palestinians, mostly children, have starved to death in Gaza

The reported killings come as Palestinians face soaring levels of malnourishment and the threat of widespread famine. The ministry said Sunday that at least 86 Palestinians, 76 of them children, have died from starvation.

Less than an hour later, the ministry reported that 18 more people had starved to death throughout the enclave in the past 24 hours.

In June, the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA — which was banned by Israel from operating in Gaza in January, reported alarming rates of child malnutrition across the territory. It found that more than 10% of children under age 5 in Gaza suffer from acute malnutrition, and that one in 10 children face general malnourishment.
