An Israeli airstrike near an American aid organization’s clinic in central Gaza on Thursday reportedly killed 15 Palestinians, including 10 children as they waited for the facility to open, according to aid officials.

The strike occurred near Project HOPE’s Altayara Clinic in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip. Victims were standing in line outside the health center when the airstrike hit.

“Project HOPE’s health clinics are a place of refuge in Gaza where people bring their small children, women access pregnancy and postpartum care, people receive treatment for malnutrition, and more,” the group’s President and CEO Rabih Torbay said in a statement. “Yet, this morning, innocent families were mercilessly attacked as they stood in line waiting for the doors to open.”

“This is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, and a stark reminder that no one and no place is safe in Gaza,” he added.

Dr. Mithqal Abutaha, the group’s project manager, told Sky News “No child waiting for food and medicine should face the risk of being bombed.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the airstrike was targeting a Hamas member allegedly involved in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack, and that the incident is under investigation.

“The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and operates to minimize harm as much as possible,” the military said in a statement to CNN.

Project HOPE confirmed that no staff members were injured in the strike but that the clinic’s operations have been suspended.
