A Dutch mosque has suspended its imam after he participated in a delegation of Muslim clerics from Europe who met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem on Monday.
“The mosque’s position is clear and unequivocal,” the mosque said in a statement posted on Instagram. “Once again, there is no place for the imam within the mosque. The board bears no responsibility whatsoever for his statements or actions outside the mosque.”
“There is no longer any formal or substantive relationship between him and Mosque Bilal Alkmaar,” the statement continued.
Video footage from the meeting showed Imam Youssef Msibih singing the Israeli national anthem in Arabic in front of Herzog. A photo taken during the trip shows him standing next to the president alongside the 15 other members of the delegation.
“We are all children of Abraham, and I believe the historic progress in our region is a progress of dialogue — between Muslims and Jews, and Jews and Muslims,” Herzog said while addressing the group.
The delegation was reportedly led by Imam Hassen Chalghoumi, a Tunisian-born cleric serving at the Drancy mosque outside Paris.
“What we have witnessed since October 7 is not merely a conflict between Israel and Hamas, not between Israel and Hezbollah, the so-called ‘Party of Satan.’ Rather, it is a confrontation between two fundamentally different worlds," Chalghoumi remarked to Herzog on Monday. "You represent the world of brotherhood, of humanity, of compassion.”
Chalghoumi has drawn criticism from many Muslims across Europe for his support of Israel.
In 2019, Chalghoumi visited Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are illegal under international law.
In a March interview on a French radio station, Chalghoumi said Rima Hassan, the first French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament, should have her citizenship revoked. Hassan was aboard the Madleen Freedom Flotilla last month with other activists aiming to raise international awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The delegation reportedly included clerics from the United Kingdom, France, Italy and The Netherlands. On the same day as their meeting with Herzog, the group also visited the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.
The trip was organized by ELNET, a non-governmental organization that works to strengthen ties between Israel and Europe.
As of now, Msibih has not publicly commented on his suspension.
