British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday the U.K. will recognize the State of Palestine in September if Israel continues its war in the Gaza Strip.
“I can confirm the U.K. will recognize the State of Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a cease-fire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace reviving the prospect of a two-state solution,” Starmer said in a televised address from 10 Downing Street.
Starmer called Palestinian statehood “the inalienable right of the Palestinian people,” and urged Hamas to release all hostages.
He added, “The very idea of a two-state solution is reducing and feels further away today than it has for many years.”
This comes only days after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognize Palestine at the same UNGA conference.
British and French recognition of Palestinian statehood would mark a pivotal shift in international advocacy for Palestinian independence.
Starmer’s remarks represent a sharp departure from the U.K.'s century-long support for Israel, often seen as sidelining Palestinian aspirations.
