Portugal is preparing to become the fourth Western country in less than a week to recognize a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s office said Thursday.

In a statement, the office said recognition could be finalized during the high-level week of the U.N. General Assembly in New York this September.

The announcement followed talks with key partners over the “extremely worrying” conflict developments, including humanitarian concerns and warnings of possible annexation of Palestinian land.

France, the U.K. and Canada have also announced plans for recognition in recent days.
