222 British members of parliament across both political spectrums signed an open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday urging him to recognize Palestine as a state.

The letter, organized by the Foreign Affairs Committee, called for the full implementation of the two-state solution, meaning a full and equal recognition not only for Israel, but also for the Palestinians.

“Whilst we appreciate the UK does not have it in its power to bring about a free and independent Palestine, UK recognition would have a significant impact due to our historic connections and our membership on the UN Security Council, so we urge you to take this step.”

The letter comes ahead of a United Nations conference on Palestine scheduled next week.

This comes as French President Emmanual Macron announced on Thursday that France will recognize Palestine as a state in September.
