At least 29 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on Sunday while seeking aid across the Gaza Strip, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry and eyewitnesses.
Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis reported receiving multiple bodies from aid distribution centers near Khan Younis and Rafah, including one operated by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
Nine Palestinians were killed near the Morag corridor, according to the Associated Press, while five others were killed near the Netzarim corridor—both areas used to bring aid trucks into the enclave.
“Troops were trying to prevent people from advancing,” one eyewitness told the AP. The soldiers then fired on the hungry crowds, the witness added.
More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed near aid centers since May, most of them near sites operated by GHF.
The private organization, backed by the United States and Israel, has been condemned by the United Nations, which accuses it of weaponizing aid.
Both Israel and the GHF have claimed warning shots are used to manage crowd control and deter alleged Hamas interference in aid distribution. The U.N. has rejected those claims.
The violence comes despite Israel declaring a “tactical pause” last Saturday aimed at increasing humanitarian aid deliveries in response to growing international condemnation over starvation in Gaza.
On Monday, the Health Ministry said at least 190 Palestinians, including 93 children, have died from starvation since the start of the war.
