A Saudi college student stabbed to death last Friday in Cambridge, England, was a longtime volunteer at the Holy Mosque in Makkah, Saudi media reported.
Muhammad Al-Qassem, 20, was in the U.K. for a 10-week English placement program. He was found shortly after midnight in a Cambridge park with multiple stab wounds and died at the scene, police said.
Cambridgeshire police described the incident as an “unprovoked attack" and that an investigation is underway.
Two suspects have been arrested, one charged with the suspicion of murder and the other charged with suspicion of assisting an offender, according to Arab News.
Funeral prayers and burial were held Friday at the Holy Mosque after his body was returned to Saudi Arabia earlier in the week, according to Khaleej Times.
On Tuesday, Saudi media outlet Inside The Haramain reported that Al-Qassem had volunteered at the mosque for years, helping guide new pilgrims during Umrah and Hajj.
“He was always the first to answer, always ready to serve,” Qassem's brother said, according to Inside The Haramain. “No matter who it was or what they needed, he never hesitated.”
He was remembered as a loving, gentle young man.
“He never raised his voice, never uttered a harsh word. He simply smiled and helped,” his brother said.
The Saudi Embassy in the U.K. said in a statement Monday it was “following up on the incident” with British authorities and extended condolences to Al-Qassem’s family.
