The Trump administration has proposed extended travel restrictions on individuals from at least 36 nations, including nine Muslim-majority countries. This move comes after Trump’s initial ban earlier this month, which affected eight Muslim-majority countries.

A memo signed by the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday incorporates two dozen nations in Africa along with others in Central Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean.

Of those countries, the Muslim-majority nations include: Mauritania, Niger, Djibouti, The Gambia, Senegal, Kyrgyzstan, Egypt, Syria and Burkina Faso.

The memo, which was first reported by The Washington Post, states that these countries must detail how they will comply with US requirements under a 60-day notice. The memo also highlights that some of the countries are designated as state sponsors of terror, and some have high rates of citizens expressing "anti-Semitic or Anti-American activity in the United States."

However, adding Egypt into the travel ban is questionable, as the country has been one of the strongest allies of the US in the Middle East since the 1979 Camp David Accords.

During his first term, United States President Donald Trump implemented a travel ban targeting seven Muslim-majority countries, which was later revoked by the Biden administration.

However, according to the Washington Post’s report, Trump pledged to make his new travel plan “bigger than before” on the campaign trail.
