US and Iran sign peace deal, ending months-long war
U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a Memorandum of Understanding Wednesday to end the Iran war. Trump signed at the Palace of Versailles during a visit to France, while Pezeshkian signed separately in Tehran. French President Emmanuel Macron, who witnessed the signing, called it “an important step in the right direction.”
Separately, Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a new ceasefire set to begin at 4 p.m. local time Friday, according to a U.S. official who spoke to Reuters. The U.S., Iran and Qatar brokered the deal.
Why it matters: The MoU consists of 14 points, including the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. sanctions relief and a $300 billion reconstruction package for Iran in exchange for Tehran not to pursue nuclear weapons. Observers have pointed out that the deal is more of an American concession to Iran, and that a Middle Eastern country emerged victories in bloody four-month war with the global superpower. Both sides will meet in 60 days to finalize a comprehensive deal, however.
Vance issues stern warning to Israeli officials criticizing Trump’s Iran deal
U.S. Vice President JD Vance issued a stern warning Thursday to Israeli officials who have criticized President Donald Trump’s peace negotiations with Iran. “Over the last three months, two-thirds of the defensive weapons that have protected your homeland have been built by American hands and paid for by American tax dollars,” Vance said at a White House press conference.
“The problem for Israel is not Donald J. Trump. Anybody in Israel who thinks their biggest problem is the President of the United States needs to wake up and smell the reality of the situation that country is in.”
Why it matters: The remarks came a day after Trump and Pezeshkian signed the MoU. Israeli cabinet members, notably National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, have repeatedly criticized Washington’s peace efforts with Tehran. It only shows how the U.S.-Israel relationship continues to worsen under an administration grappling with its America First voter base.
Saudi Arabia’s flag lifted above pitch at World Cup opener out of respect for Shahadah
Saudi Arabia’s flag was held above the pitch during the pre-match ceremony of its 2026 World Cup opener against Uruguay on Monday, the only flag among all 48 competing nations specifically ordered not to be placed on the ground.
Uruguay’s flag was also lifted to maintain ceremonial balance.
Why it matters: Because the Saudi flag contains Islam’s declaration of faith, the Shahadah, it is strictly forbidden under Saudi law for it to touch any ground surface. It was a small moment with real symbolic weight not only for Saudis, but for Muslims worldwide.
Zidane Iqbal becomes first player of Pakistani heritage to compete in FIFA World Cup
Iraqi midfielder Zidane Iqbal became the first player of Pakistani heritage to compete in a FIFA World Cup Tuesday, entering the pitch in the 59th minute of Iraq’s 4-1 defeat to Norway.
Born in Manchester in 2003 to a Pakistani father and an Iraqi mother, Iqbal came through Manchester United’s academy and became the youngest British South Asian to play in the Champions League in 2021. He currently plays for FC Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Why it matters: For Pakistan, a country with roughly 241 million Muslims, Iqbal’s appearance on the World Cup stage is a major sporting achievement. For decades, Pakistan has tried, and failed, to qualify for the World Cup.
Kaaba receives new kiswa as Saudi Arabia marks first of Muharram
Saudi Arabia marked the first of Muharram, the first day of the Islamic “Hijri” year, on Monday with the replacement of the kiswa, the black and gold silk cloth covering the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest site.
Thousands of worshippers inside the Grand Mosque of Mecca watched as workers performed the centuries-old tradition of replaced the Kaaba’s old kiswa with a new one.
Why it matters: Saudi authorities adorn the Kaaba with a new kiswa twice a year; on the first of Muharram and at the start of Hajj. The replacement is one of Islam’s most visible traditions — a reminder that, as of Monday, Prophet Muhammad’s companions migrated to Medina and created the first Islamic state 1,448 years ago.
