Venezuelans cast mock votes in a rehearsal on Sunday as President Nicolás Maduro seeks a third term at the end of this month. Maduro has been one of the most vocal pro-Palestine heads of state since Oct. 7.

The July 28 election marks a pivotal moment for Venezuela's ruling United Socialist Party, which has dominated the country for 25 years. Maduro, who has been critical of Israel like Latin American heads of state, faces a deeply divided electorate.

Accusations of economic mismanagement, corruption, and a prolonged crisis have eroded his base as many Venezuelans are pushed into poverty and forced to migrate, shifting momentum ahead of the election onto his opposition’s side, despite Maduro's attempts to showcase a democratic process.

Maduro has ruled Venezuela since taking office in 2013.
