Turkey secured a 2-1 win against Austria on Tuesday in the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, moving in the draw to play against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
“This was a very important game, the whole team played great. I am taking this Man of the Match award in the name of the whole team. I am very happy and very proud.” said Turkish Defender Merih Demiral. He scored both goals for his country's team.
Turks constitute the largest ethnic minority residing in Germany, where the Euro is being held this year, numbering around 3 million people.
Turkey is one of five Muslim-majority countries in Europe, with Turkey and Albania being the only two who qualified for the tournament.
