The UN group comprising of five independent experts said in an opinion that Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arbitrarily imprisoned in violation of international law.
“[The] working group concludes that his detention had no legal basis and appears to have been intended to disqualify him from running for political office. Thus, from the outset, that prosecution was not grounded in law and was reportedly instrumentalised for a political purpose,” said the working group through their opinion.
Their opinion deemed Khan’s immediate release and provision of reparation as the “appropriate remedy” to his unlawful imprisonment.
The Pakistani government has yet to respond to the opinion.
