Pakistan has permitted its Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency to tap phone calls and messages. 

"The federal government, in the interest of national security and in the apprehension of any offense, is pleased to authorize officers ... to intercept calls and messages or to trace calls through any telecoms system," read a notice that was shared with the ministry of information technology and telecommunications on July 8. 

Opposition politicians and social media users have shared concerns of potential misuse and rights violations that could emerge from the decision. The decision was also opposed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
