The Nigerian women’s basketball team earned their first Olympic win since 2004, upsetting Australia 75-62 in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Prior to the matchup, Australia was ranked 3rd in the world for Women’s Basketball, and Nigeria was ranked 12th. After failing to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, then going winless in 2021, the team shocked the world with their win Monday night.

“We’ve stuck together and this is what it’s about. Like, you overcome adversity and you fight until the finish and you come out with the win,” said Amy Okonwo, who scored 13 points in their win.

Nigeria is the only African country to ever win a game in Women’s Basketball at the Olympics, first in 2004 and now in 2024.
