Mohamed Ould Ghazaouani is currently on track for reelection in Mauritania, obtaining approximately 55% of the votes so far. Muslims constitute 99% of Mauritania’s population.

“The last word belongs to the Mauritanian voters. I commit myself to respecting their choice," Ghazouani said after placing his vote on Saturday.

Mauritania is in its first stages of democracy, as the country has experienced multiple coups in the last few years. Ghazouani was their second ever democratically elected president in 2019, and if reelected, will serve his final term through 2029.
