The Assad regime, which ruled Syria for over 50 years in tyranny, has fallen.
“We declare the city of Damascus free from the tyrant Bashar al-Assad,” the opposition announced early Sunday morning. “To the displaced all over the world, a free Syria awaits you.”
According to the Associated Press, both the Syrian Army Command and the Jordanian government have confirmed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled the country in a private plane.
Upon Assad’s departure, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Al-Jalali announced in a televised speech that he decided to stay in his home and welcomes a new government that the Syrian people choose with government institutions that “are for everyone.”
Syrians were seen celebrating in Umayyad Square in central Damascus upon the announcement. Mosques throughout Syria have been announcing the fall of the regime with Takbirat celebrations.
