Head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran’s capital Tehran in a guesthouse along with a bodyguard early Wednesday morning, Iran State TV announced.
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Massoud Pezashkian.
Israel has not confirmed it was behind the attack, although Israel is the expected planner of the assassination. An explosion device, which was detonated remotely, was planted in the guesthouse he was staying in months ago, according to a New York Times investigation.
The political chief’s funeral service was led by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
