Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announces his intention to resign in protest against the government's approval of the three-phased ceasefire and hostage deal aimed at ending the 15-month Gaza War, according to a preliminary report by Haaratz.
Ben-Gvir, leader of the Jewish Power Party, said on Thursday that all member of his party, including himself, will resign on Sunday, the day phase one of the ceasefire will begin.
Also known as the Otzma Yehudit Party in Israel, Ben Gvir's far-right political party allied itself with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2022, helping him assume office for the third time.
According to a report by Reuters, Ben-Gvir recommended Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, another far-right member of Netanyahu's cabinet to resign. Smotrich also condemned the deal, saying that the member of his party, Religious Zionism, will resign if Israel does not resume fighting Hamas in six weeks.
However, Smotrich has not officially resigned as of Saturday.
Both far-right ministers have been condemned internationally since taking office in 2022 due to their anti-Arab rhetoric and support of Israeli annexation of the Gaza Strip.
