The United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) announced on Sunday that at least seven babies in northern Gaza froze to death.

The UNRWA announcement, which was posted on X, said that “cold weather and lack of shelter are causing the deaths of newborns in Gaza,” and that nearly 8,000 “lack lifesaving care.”

This comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on Israel to stop attacking Gaza’s northern hospitals, all of which are no longer functioning, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Gaza has four hospitals, the last functioning being Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia. It and the surrounding area has been subject to 50 attacks by Israel since October 2024, UNRWA also said in the announcement, citing WHO.

The last attack, which was a raid on Dec 27, left the hospital “empty,” according to WHO.

Kamal Adwan was accused of having a “Hamas Command Center” within its walls by the Israeli Defense Forces, who announced on X after the raid that they detained over 240 “Hamas,Islamic Jihad terrorists.”

The hospital staff were arrested, including Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Kamal Adwan’s director. The Israeli Defense Forces accuse him of being a “Hamas Terrorist Operative” and his whereabouts are currently unknown.

The IDF have not provided evidence to substantiate their claim, according to the report by the Associated Press.

UNRWA called for the release of Dr. Abu Safiya and condemned the hospital raid in a statement.

There are roughly 77,000 Palestinians remaining in northern Gaza, which has “been under a tightened siege for more than three months,” according to the UNRWA statement, and that delivering critical aid has been “extremely challenging.”
