Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, who lost nine of his ten children from Israeli airstrikes on their home in Khan Younis, died from brain and internal injuries on Sunday. His 11-year old son Adam still remains in the hospital, and he is expected to survive

Dr. al-Najjar was returning from dropping off his wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, at the Nasser Hospital Complex when their home was struck on May 23. Hamdi endured injuries to his brain, lungs, right arm, and kidney.

Before Hamdi’s death, his brother Ali al-Najjar issued an appeal to Italy to evacuate Hamdi and Adam in search of a well-equipped and functioning hospital. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said they would help “cure Adam” according to Italian media, and are working on evacuating him by June 11.

The Italian Foreign Ministry also offered to evacuate Hamdi as well, but his transfer was deemed too dangerous due to his critical condition.

After al-Najjar’s death, sources within the ministry indicated that his wife may also be evacuated to Italy, according to The Guardian.
